MG Astray Red Frame Kai Tactical Arms | Weapon Painting & Metallic Accents

MG / ASTRAY · DETAIL 02

Red Frame Kai · Tactical Arms

The Tactical Arms is larger than the mobile suit itself and deserves its own build article. My emphasis was deep red paint, controlled shading and small metallic accents without major physical modifications.

Tactical Arms color choices

The main red uses Mahogany surfacer and Mr. Color C81 Azuki (Red No. 2). White areas use gray surfacer and GX Cool White. Gray areas use RLM75 Gray Violet, while metallic parts include GX Red Gold and Burnt Iron over black surfacer.

Metallic accents and masking

Gold and copper were added selectively, including a few small areas painted by brush. For one experiment I masked the part and combined metallic paint with clear blue. Looking back, a clear yellow or orange-like tone might also have worked with the red frame.

Gerbera Straight and Tiger Pierce

I preserved the plated sword blades instead of repainting them. The hilts and other small surfaces were finished largely with solid colors rather than gradation painting, with black panel lining to define the details.

What worked

The broad Tactical Arms surfaces displayed the gradation effectively. Separating the equipment for painting was relatively straightforward. The smaller swords were better suited to solid paint, and their finish would be matched to the body later through selective weathering.
